Which is the best identity theft protection service?

There are a lot of companies out there offering things like identity insurance and plans that say a completely safeguard your credit history and your good name. Of all the identity theft protection services out there I do wonder which of them actually do what they say. All too often companies like this just do things that you can do on your own, by putting a freeze on your credit or forbidding the opening of new accounts, all of which is stuff that you could do with a few simple phone calls. Still I guess they do serve a purpose for people who are lazy.
