Febuxostat a Drug that Inhibits Xanthine Oxidase
February 27th, 2010 by admin
A newly approved drug for treating gout is what is known as Febuxostat, only being approved by the Federal Drug Administration in 2008. The action of this drug is that it inhibits the xanthine oxidase so that the uric acid level in the blood circulation will be decreased. Xanthine oxidase is the enzyme that breaks down purine into uric acid. The cause of the inflammatory reaction and pain in gout is the uric acid that gets deposited into joints. As febuxostat inhibits the xanthine oxidase, then the purine is not problem down into uric acid and the bloods uric acid levels are reduced. This then decreases the chances of uric acid being deposited into the joints and gout occurring.
