Metal halide are more expensive than other types of aquarium lights. But this shouldn’t put you off from using one. These aquarium lights are known for their “sun-like effect,” creating an almost magical display on water, thanks to the rippling reflection. They are high intensity lights that provide focused lighting. Metal halide lights can be used with different types of aquarium, freshwater or saltwater fish tanks, especially those that are planted and with coral reefs.
But will all these benefits, also consider some downsides aside from the high cost. The high intensity lighting produces more heat, which affects the water temperature. A chiller may then be used to regulate them temperature. To prevent a high degree of radiation, what you need is a UV shield.
Determine the type of metal halide light your aquarium needs. Consider the wattage, which indicates the brightness and Kelvin ratings (lower degrees equal whiter or more yellow light; high degrees equal bluer lighting). Metal halide lights are also available in different fixtures such as the ventilated hoods, independent bulb hoods, pendants, and combined lighting system.
